Luca Filippi (born August 9, 1985 in Savigliano ) is an Italian racing driver . In 2005 he won the Italian Formula 3000 championship . Filippi started in the GP2 series from 2006 to 2012 . His best overall placement in the GP2 series was second place in 2011. From 2010 to 2011 he competed again in the Auto GP and in 2011 was runner-up. From 2013 to 2016 he took part in several races in the IndyCar Series .
Career
Filippi began his motorsport career in karting in 1994 , in which he was active until 2002. In 2003 he competed in some races of the British Formula Renault and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and drove the entire season in the Italian Formula Renault, in which he finished 18th in the overall standings. A year later Filippi drove two races in the Superfund Euro Formula 3000 for the Euronova team. He also drove half of the season in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished 24th in the overall standings. His main focus this year, however, was on the Italian Formula Renault, in which he was third overall. In 2005 Filippi switched to the Euroseries 3000, which had since been renamed the Italian Formula Renault . He started for the team of Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella , Fisichella Motorsport . Filippi won half of the races and thus the first championship title of his career.
In 2006 Filippi started in the GP2 series for the first time . He drove the first six races again for Fisichella Motor Sport. He was then replaced by Giorgio Pantano . After pausing two racing weekends, he started for BCN Competición for the rest of the season . Filippi scored twice in the season: he finished fifth in the sprint race in Imola and fourth in the main race in Monza . Filippi scored a total of 7 points and thus finished 19th in the overall ranking.
In 2007 Filippi switched to Super Nova Racing , David Sears' team , which celebrated great successes in Formula 3000 . His teammate was the British Formula 3 champion Mike Conway . Filippi took his first GP2 victory right in the first race in Bahrain . In the other races he did not win again, but he came second four times and third once. In the overall standings, he finally took fourth place. Thanks to his good results in the GP2 series, Honda signed him as one of their Formula 1 test drivers. In November and December 2007 he took part in test drives for the Honda and Super Aguri teams.
Filippi started for the Malaysian Meritus team in the newly founded GP2 Asia series . The 2008 GP2 Asia Series season was disappointing for him, as he only finished in the points in the first race in Dubai, where he finished fifth. In the overall ranking he was only 17th. In the European variant Filippi started in 2008 for the ART Grand Prix . His team-mate was Romain Grosjean , who was the sovereign winner of the GP2 Asia Series in 2008. He was already considered a favorite for the 2008 GP2 season by some experts, but the season turned out differently than expected: He scored only five points on the first five race weekends and was overshadowed by his strong team-mate Grosjean. In the middle of the season Filippi was fired from the ART team due to lack of success and replaced by the former Formula 1 driver Sakon Yamamoto . Filippi found a new team very quickly and was introduced to Arden International as successor to Yelmer Buurman two days after his dismissal . His teammate at Arden was the Swiss Sébastien Buemi , who, like Filippi, was a former ART pilot. For Arden he only got one point. In the overall ranking he finished 19th with six points. His ART successor Yamamoto scored fewer points than him.
Filippi also competed in the second season of the GP2 Asia series and returned to his former racing team BCN Competición. After the team was sold after a race weekend and he was not taken over by the new Ocean Racing Technology team , his involvement in the GP2 Asia series was over. Filippi returned to Super Nova Racing for the 2009 GP2 Series season. As a team-mate of Javier Villa , he finished second three times and won the last race of the season in Portimão . At the end of the season he finished fifth overall.
For the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 returned Filippi returns to Meritus. After he had already achieved two second places, he secured the runner-up title behind his compatriot Davide Valsecchi with a victory in the last main race . Because after four years in the GP2 series he initially had no cockpit, Filippi switched to Euronova Racing in 2010 in the Auto GP , whose championship he had won in 2005 when the series was still called Italian Formula 3000. He started the new season well with a win at the season opener. After missing a race weekend, he switched to Super Nova Racing and also won the season finale. At the end of the season he finished fifth overall. After GP2 driver Josef Král had to take a break due to injury after an accident in Valencia , Filippi jumped in as a substitute driver for Super Nova Racing for five race weekends and returned to the GP2 series. With his participation, he became the GP2 pilot with the most starts. At the end of the 2010 season, he finished 20th overall.
In 2011 Filippi first took part in the season finale of the GP2 Asia series for Scuderia Coloni . He last started for the team in 2006, when it was still called Fisichella Motor Sport International. With a tenth place as the best result, he was 20th in the drivers' championship. He then contested his sixth GP2 season and initially returned to Super Nova Racing. After remaining without points in the first four races, he scored his first points of the season in third place in the main race in Monte Carlo . For the sixth race weekend he switched to Scuderia Coloni within the GP2 series. He managed to win his first race for Coloni, whose best result of the season was sixth place before. It was Filippi's third win in his 100th GP2 race. In the further course of the season, victories in the sprint race in Spa-Francorchamps and in the main race in Monza followed. In the races for Coloni he only scored no points in one race and a total of four podium positions. As a result, he managed to win the runner-up behind Grosjean. Filippi also competed in the 2011 Auto GP for SuperNova. He scored his only win of the season at the main race in Brno . He did not appear at a car GP event because of the overlap with the GP2 series. With a total of six podium finishes, he was also runner-up in the Auto GP. With 127 to 130 points he was defeated by Kevin Ceccon .
In 2012 Filippi wanted to leave Europe and switch to the IndyCar Series in North America . He was to get a cockpit with Rahal Letterman Lanigan and only not take part in the first four races in order to enter the season for the Indianapolis 500 . However, his racing team Michel Jourdain Jr. the preference for this race and Filippi did not make his IndyCar debut in the further course of the season. Instead, Filippi returned to Coloni in the GP2 series for two events in 2012 . After almost a year without racing experience, he immediately won the main race in Monza. It was Coloni's only win of the season. At the following race weekend, Filippi took pole position.
In 2013 Filippi's entry into the IndyCar Series worked. In the second half of the season, Bryan Herta Autosport gave him a cockpit for four races. Filippi achieved tenth place as the best result and once set the fastest race lap. He finished 30th in the drivers' championship. He also completed GT races. He won three races in the International GT Open . He finished the season in fourth place in the Super GT classification. In 2014 Filippi completed four IndyCar races for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
In 2015 Filippi shared a cockpit with Ed Carpenter at CFH Racing in the IndyCar Series . Filippi completed the street course, Carpenter the oval course races. At the Honda Indy Toronto , he achieved his first podium finish with second place behind his team-mate Josef Newgarden . It was also the team's first double victory. He finished the season in 21st place overall. Filippi received a vehicle from Dale Coyne Racing for the start of the 2016 IndyCar Series . He completed a total of five races for the racing team. A 14th place in Toronto was his best result.
In 2017/18 Filippi contested the FIA Formula E championship for the NIO Formula E team . At the end of the season he finished 21st in the drivers' championship. For the new season he no longer received a contract as a regular driver.
