After two races in the British Formula 3 championship in 2005 , Burmann started in this racing series in 2006 and achieved fourth place with two victories. After he had already driven four races for Fortec in the Formula 3 Euro Series this year , he switched to the Manor Motorsport team for the 2007 season in order to continue to compete in the Formula 3 Euro Series. At the end of the season, he finished sixth. In 2007 Buurman also started for Fortec in four races in Formula Renault 3.5 to replace the injured Richard Philippe . On the second race weekend he was fifth and fourth in the two races that were held.

In the 2008 season, Buurman drove for the Arden International team in the GP2 Asia series, which was held for the first time in the spring . The Pakistani Adam Khan was originally supposed to drive for Arden in the GP2 Asia series. However, Khan decided to focus on the A1 Grand Prix and his studies and was therefore replaced by Buurman after the second race weekend. Although he could only take part in six of the ten races, the Dutchman managed to achieve ninth place in the overall standings. In the subsequent season of the European GP2 series , Buurman stayed with Arden International. The Dutchman was unable to keep up with his teammate Sébastien Buemi in most of the races and only scored points once in second place. In the middle of the season he was replaced by Luca Filippi . In the overall ranking he finished 20th. Then he started for the PSV Eindhoven team, which was supervised by Azerti Motorsport , in the Superleague Formula and was the only driver of the team to win the runner-up. Among other things, he left his compatriot Robert Doornbos behind.

In the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/09 , Buurman came into action as a surprise: After the sale of BCN Competición to Tiago Monteiro , Buurman started for the newly founded Ocean Racing Technology team from the second race weekend . On the last race weekend, the Dutchman was replaced by Karun Chandhok and finished 19th overall at the end of the season. He then returned to the Superleague Formula and competed for the entire 2009 season for the RSC Anderlecht team, which was supervised by Zakspeed . Buurman managed a victory and his team finished fourth overall at the end of the season. For the third race weekend of the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/10 , Buurman returned to Ocean Racing Technology and finished 21st overall at the end of the season. In the 2010 Superleague Formula season , Buurman started for the AC Milan team, which is supported by the Atech Grand Prix . He won two races and was once a weekend winner . His team finished fifth in the championship at the end of the season. At the end of the season, Buurman completed his first Formula 1 test for Force India .
