Ubbergen ( listen ? / I ) is a district of the Dutch municipality of Berg en Dal in the province of Gelderland . Ubbergen was an independent municipality until January 1, 2015, which then merged with Groesbeek and Millingen aan de Rijn . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

Ubbergen is located on the south bank of the Waal river between the city of Nijmegen and Millingen. It consists of two very different landscapes. The duffel polders with meadows, brickworks and ponds created by their activities ("tichelgaten") lie on the river . Further to the south lies the wooded hill country popular with tourists (10–90 m above sea level), with some clear streams. (Beek = Bach). This forest goes over the German border into the Klever Reichswald .

In Ubbergen there are still brick factories (including in Kekerdom) and in Beek there are also laundries. A lot of cattle are kept in the polder area . Because of the beautiful location there is significant tourism and many, often wealthy, commuters who work in neighboring Nijmegen have lived here since the late 19th century. Beek and Ubbergen are strongly influenced by villas from the period 1875–1920.

history

Leuth was mentioned in a document as early as 891. Beek was part of the Klevian land of Kranenburg until 1348 . Leuth and Kekerdom belonged to the Prussian office of Düffel until after the Congress of Vienna and were only given to the Netherlands afterwards in exchange for Schenkenschanz . The places in the river plains were often hit by floods until the 19th century. From Ubbergen, Canadian soldiers began an offensive against the area around Kleve and Rees in February 1945 during World War II .

Attractions

  • In the forest areas you can go for nice walks, etc. a. to the viewing table, to the "Klabauterbaum" and on the "Duivelsberg" (Teufelsberg). Especially in winter you have beautiful views of the lowlands.
  • The "tichelgaten", ponds and lakes created by mining clay for the brickworks, are popular with anglers from all over the region.
  • You can get sheets with hiking and cycling routes in the municipality of Ubbergen from the Nijmegen tourist office (“VVV”).
  • One of the daily routes of the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse leads through Ubbergen.

Ubbergen has several hotels, including a larger luxury hotel at Berg en Dal. There are also several campsites.
