Millingen am Rhein ( Dutch Millingen aan de Rijn ) is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland and has belonged to Berg en Dal since January 1, 2015 . The municipality, one of the smallest in the Netherlands, consisted only of the residential area Millingen aan de Rijn and a large nature reserve.

Millingen is the only place in the Netherlands where the Rhine coming from Germany has not yet split up and still bears the name Rijn . Just two kilometers after the border, at the beginning of the Rhine-Meuse delta, the Waal and Lek estuaries arise . The latter is initially still called Nederrijn .

Location and economy

The place is in the Düffel area on the south bank of the Rhine opposite Pannerden (municipality of Rijnwaarden ). Millingen borders in the east on Bimmen , a district of Kleve in Germany. A NIAG bus line also runs to this city on weekdays . The neighboring town to the west is Kekerdom . There are many brick- making factories in the area as the soil is very suitable for this.

history

In the 3rd century there was a Roman military road near the village . Millingen's main street is still called Heerweg. In the 7th century a new settlement was built, which was later destroyed by a flood. The catastrophe then repeated itself several times. A basilica is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 721/22 . This was located in the "Villa Millingi", which belonged to Count Ebroin in Hattuaries , and is therefore the first documented noble church in the Franconian Rhineland.

In the 18th century, the Pannerdensch Kanaal was dug here, an artificial arm of the Rhine, which has since led to the greater part of the Rhine water flowing into the Waal to reduce flooding in the western Netherlands.

Attractions

Part of the De Gelderse Poort nature development area is located in the local area . This is a wetland area where river dunes and an alluvial forest are to be created in the future . In the village there is a visitor center on this topic.
