Berg en Dal is a municipality in the south of the Dutch province of Gelderland, right on the border with Germany .

geography

The municipal area is located south of the Rhine or the Waal , the largest arm of the Rhine in the river delta of the Rhine , and extends to the western end of the Lower Rhine ridge , so called "Zeven Heuvelen" ( German  seven hills ) , so that it is within the municipality An altitude difference of 90 meters can be found, a value that is not common for the Netherlands.

Berg en Dal borders Germany in the east with the municipalities of Kleve and Kranenburg , in the south with Gennep and Mook en Middelaar (both in the province of Limburg ), in the west with Heumen and Nijmegen and in the north, separated by the Rhine and Waal, with Lingewaard and Zevenaar .

history

The municipality was created on January 1, 2015 from the merger of the municipalities Groesbeek , Millingen aan de Rijn and Ubbergen . Originally it was named after the largest of the three original parishes, Groesbeek . In a referendum, the citizens of the new municipality could decide whether this name should remain or be changed to Berg en Dal, a proposal that had been discussed in advance of the merger. Berg en Dal is a village on the border between Groesbeek and Ubbergen, and the name “Berg und Tal” fits in with the topography of the municipality. In the vote, 50.8% voted for Berg en Dal and 49.2% for Groesbeek. Therefore, the municipality name was officially changed on January 1, 2016.

The municipality will be governed by a coalition of CDA, GroenLinks, Groesbeekse Volkspartij and Polderbreed for the legislative period from 2018 to 2022 .

Twin cities

There are town twinning with

On the southern edge of the Rhine lowlands, the N325 runs from Arnhem to the German border, where it is continued by Bundesstraße 9 . From here the N840 branches off to the north and Millingen, and the N841 to the south and Groesbeek. The N842 from Nijmegen and the N843 from Milsbeek also lead to Groesbeek .

Until 1991 there was a connection in the direction of Nijmegen and Cologne via the left-hand Lower Rhine route . Since spring 2008, draisine trips for up to 14 people between Kleve and Groesbeek have been possible on part of this section . The public transport is buses of NIAG offered (SB 58 and line 60 from Kleve to Nijmegen Millingen).
