Gennep ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the southeast of the Netherlands , in the province of Limburg . The community has 17,063 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) on an area of ​​50.42 km². Gennep is located at the confluence of the Niers in the Meuse , about 20 km south of Nijmegen . The municipality borders the German cities of Kleve and Goch in the east . In 2015 Gennep was awarded the honorary title of “ European Reformation City ” by the Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe . Audio file / audio sample

Localities and municipality structure

In addition to the city of Gennep itself, the following localities belong to the municipality of Gennep: Aaldonk, Dam, De Looi, Diekendaal, Heijen, Hekkens, Milsbeek , Ottersum, Smele, Ven-Zelderheide en Zelder.

history

Reformed Church, the first Protestant church building in the Netherlands

The city of Gennep received city ​​rights in 1371 . During the Reformation, from 1530 onwards, evangelical refugees from the Netherlands, Belgium and northern France came to Gennep, where they lived in denominational tolerance and cooperation with the Catholic residents and priests. Due to its border location , the city had a checkered history and was among others to Duchy of Cleves (until 1815) to Prussia , was from the French occupied, came in the proceedings of the Congress of Vienna to the United Kingdom of the Netherlands . From 1830 to 1839 Gennep was briefly part of Belgium . Since then, the city has been part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands .

In the early modern period, ceramics, including earthenware, were produced in the city . With the commissioning of the Boxteler Bahn railway line in 1873, the city experienced an economic boom. The route was gradually discontinued before and after the Second World War .

During the Second World War, disguised Wehrmacht soldiers captured the railway bridge at Gennep on the night of May 9-10, 1940 . In February 1945 the battle in the Reichswald took place in the nearby Klever Reichswald and also near Gennep . On March 24, 1945 , troops of the Western Allies crossed the Rhine near Wesel .

The city has a medieval center with city ​​walls and numerous historical buildings, including the 17th century town hall , the Het Petershuis Museum , the Martinus church tower and the Reformed Church , the "oldest Protestant church in the Netherlands". The ruins of the Genneperhuis fortress are located directly at the mouth of the Niers in a scenic area .
