Eijsden-Margraten ( Limburg Èèsjde-Mergraote ) is the name of a new Dutch municipality that was created with effect from January 1, 2011 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Eijsden and Margraten , both in the province of Limburg . The new municipality has 25,648 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) on an area of 78.41 km². The municipality of Maastricht was against the merger for a long time because it wanted to enlarge itself by both or at least one of the two municipalities.
Eijsden-Margraten belongs on the one hand to the Limburg hill country and on the other hand to the Maas Valley. In the west, the Meuse forms the municipal boundary . The new municipality borders on Belgian territory in the south-west and south . On January 1, 1978 the state border with Belgium in the area of the Meuse was straightened.
