history
Weert was created at the latest in the 11th century at an intersection of trade routes. It was in 1414 the town charter . The Counts of Horn , from whose line Philippe de Montmorency, Count of Hoorn comes, had a castle here for a long time (destroyed by the French in 1703).
Due to the Treaty of Venlo , the rule in the Duchy of Geldern, to which Weert belonged, was handed over to the Habsburgs . Weert thus became part of the Spanish Netherlands . Since the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, Weert has belonged to Austrian funds .
When new traffic routes emerged after 1850, the city flourished again.
