Bergen ( Limburgish Baerge ) is a Dutch municipality in the province of Limburg and, according to the CBS, had 13,125 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 on a total area of 108.5 km².

geography

Bergen consists of a 20 km long strip along the Meuse , north of Arcen en Velden . The community borders on the German communities Goch and Weeze . In the municipality are the villages of Bergen and Nieuw-Bergen with the town hall, Aijen, Afferden, Wellerlooi and Well - all on the Maas - as well as Siebengewald on the road to Goch.

history

The whole area has only been part of the Netherlands since 1815. Before it belonged u. a. to Prussia and Austria . During the Second World War , the villages with their churches and castles were largely destroyed because they were on the front line from around November 1944 to March 1945. The evacuated places were also looted several times.

Infrastructure

There is a lot of agriculture in the community, some marinas, campsites and a gravel pit.

A lake was created near Well where water sports can be practiced. In the south of the municipality is the De Maasduinen National Park (German: the Maasdünen), in which many plants and animals under species protection live.
