Old Sittard
Sittard received city rights in 1243 , belonged to the Duchy of Jülich for a long time and was assigned to the Netherlands after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. During the Belgian uprising (1830-1839) the city was temporarily part of Belgium.
The St. Petrikirche stands out in the inner city. The church was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and was restored in a neo-Gothic style in 1875 by the Roermond architect Pierre Cuypers . In Sittard there are still some church and monastery buildings as well as some houses from the 16th and 17th centuries . Parts of the city fortifications have also been preserved.
The city is a carnival stronghold .
