Toon Hermans
Antoine Gerard Theodore "Toon" Hermans (born December 17, 1916 in Sittard , † April 22, 2000 in Nieuwegein ) was a Dutch cabaret artist , singer , painter and poet . Together with Wim Sonneveld and Wim Kan, he is one of the "Big Three" of Dutch cabaret.
plant
Toon Hermans premiered in 1932 with his first own cabaret show in the Limburg theater . He became famous nationwide in the 1950s and 1960s with his "One Man Shows", especially when they were broadcast on television since 1958. By 1997 there were twelve issues. Hermans also wrote many popular songs, for himself and for other performers. His carnival song " Mien waar is mijn feestneus " sung by him was number one in the Dutch charts for four weeks in 1968. He called himself a "clown". His sense of humor was down to earth, coarse and not very political.
That Hermans was also gifted as a painter became known only after his death. In 2006 his paintings were exhibited in the Kunsthal Rotterdam . His heirs had his pictures auctioned at Christie's in Amsterdam in 2007 because they had not been able to initiate their own museum. 600,000 euros were raised for a good cause - the Toon Hermans houses .
social commitment
After his wife Rietje died of cancer in 1990, Toon Hermans got involved in helping people with cancer. In several Dutch cities he opened “Toon Hermann's Houses” for cancer patients and their relatives.
Awards
In the course of his career Toon Hermans received numerous awards, the first of which was the first prize in 1934 at the “Cabaret der Onbekenden”. In 1968 he was voted the best entertainer in Europe by an international jury. Hermans was voted the most popular artist of the year in the Netherlands several times, in 2000 for the “Nederlandse Artiest van de Eeuw” (Dutch: Dutch Artist of the Century). In 1965 he became a knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau , and a few years later an officer of the order. The devout Catholic received two papal awards, including the order "Pro Pontifice et Ecclesia". In Belgium he was awarded the Order of Leopold II .
Toon Hermans was an honorary citizen of his hometown Sittard.
souvenir
In 2003, a bronze statue of Toon Hermans was unveiled in the Sittard Playhouse. When the Dutch TV broadcaster KRO voted on the biggest Dutch in 2004, Toon Hermans came in 22nd.
In 2004 Herman van Veen wrote this poem:
"When I drove to Sittard,
I thought:
If I had
n't seen Toon Hermans ,
would I have become
what I am now?
A Hermans without s.
Toon - role model for fun,
State Secretary van Onzin,
God's clown.
Once wrote him a letter.
I love you.
As proof of my affection
, I will wear my eyes just as blue
in the future
. "
