The urban area is immediately south of the city of Utrecht . Nieuwegein was formed in the 1970s from the previous municipalities of Vreeswijk and Jutphaas. Vreeswijk is located with its center directly on the Lek , one of the Dutch arms of the Rhine. Several canals run through the Nieuwegein area: the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal , the Lek Canal and the Merwede Canal . Nieuwegein is located east of the A2 motorway (Utrecht - Den Bosch ), south of the A12 motorway (Utrecht - The Hague / Rotterdam ) and west of the A27 ( Hilversum - Utrecht-Ost - Breda ). The city does not have a rail connection, but by the sneltram called light rail , which almost exclusively on its own track body to achieve runs in 15 to 20 minutes from Utrecht Central Station.

history

In the 13th century there was a town called Het Gein here . This had received a river tariff from the German emperor around 1295. In 1333 it fell victim to a civil war and was destroyed. The place Vreeswijk is said to have been a Frisian settlement. It had significant locks that were destroyed in another civil war in 1481 and then renewed. The village of Jutphaas arose in the Middle Ages along the Kromme Rijn river . It was a not insignificant shipping settlement in the 17th century. In May 1940 the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht ( western campaign against France); She was liberated at the end of 1944.

As already mentioned, these villages were merged in 1971 to form the new municipality of Nieuwegein; A modern city center was created between the old cores.
