Keila (Estonian. Keila vald ) is a former rural community in the west of Harju County in Estonia , northwest of Tallinn on the coast of the Gulf of Finland . Since 2017 it has been part of the newly formed rural community Lääne-Harju .

geography

The rural parish of Keila bordered the rural parishes of Harku , Saue and the city of Keila to the east, the parishes of Kernu , Vasalemma, and Padise to the south, and Paldiski to the west.

The elevation profile is typical for the coastal area. The municipality was bounded by the rivers Keila in the east and Vasalemma in the west.

history

Initially, the small community was the administrative unit in the area of ​​the Keila manor. In 1866, the municipality got extended powers through the new municipal law. At that time there were eight small parishes in the area that is now Keila parish. On December 28, 1890, the farmer's representative wrote letter No. 1493 in which he announced the merger of the small communities Käesalu, Ohtu, Klooga, Humala, Joa-Meremõisa-Laulasmaa, Keila, Lehola and Maeru to form the municipality of Keila. This day is generally regarded as the hour of birth of the Keila community, in spite of multiple border changes.

The main industries are agriculture, the timber, fish and clothing industries. The electrical engineering manufacturer Harju Elekter is based in Keila.

Culture

In 2010, the Arvo Pärt Center was founded in Laulasmaa, a music and media center committed to maintaining the legacy of the composer Arvo Pärt , who built it himself.
