Loppi [ ˈlɔpːi ] ( Swedish : Loppis ) is a municipality in southern Finland with 7861 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Kanta-Häme countryside, 20 kilometers west of the city of Riihimäki and 50 kilometers south of Hämeenlinna . The distance to the capital Helsinki is 75 kilometers.

The three settlement centers of the municipality are the parish of Loppi, in which around 2400 people live, as well as Launonen and Läyliäinen , each with around 1200 inhabitants. The municipal area also includes the villages of Hevosoja, Hirvijärvi, Hunsala, Joentaka, Kormu, Metsäkylä, Ourajoki, Pilpala, Räyskälä, Sajaniemi, Salo, Teväntö, Topeno and Vojakkala.

The old church of Loppi

The old church of Loppi is dedicated to St. Birgitta and is therefore popularly called Santa-Pirjo. The wooden structure is extremely simple and has a rectangular floor plan without a church tower. The old church probably dates from the middle of the 17th century (the exact date of construction is unknown) and is therefore one of the oldest wooden churches in Finland. Today it is only used in summer for evening services and weddings. The parish church of Loppi, built in 1885–87, serves the community. After it was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1914, it was rebuilt in 1919-21. The brick-built church has a plan in the form of a Greek cross and a west tower.
