Tavastia [ kɑntɑˌhæmɛ ] ( Swed . Egentliga Tavastland ) is a landscape ( maakunta ) in Finland . It is located in the south of the country and forms the heartland of the historic Häme landscape . The name Kanta-Häme means something like "Kern-Häme". The administrative seat of the landscape and the historical center of Häme is the town of Hämeenlinna .
geography
Kanta-Häme is located in the southern interior of Finland. Neighboring landscapes are Uusimaa in the south, Varsinais-Suomi in the west, Pirkanmaa in the north and Päijät-Häme in the east. The area of the Kanta-Häme landscape is 5,707 km².
history
The Kanta-Häme area has been inhabited since the Iron Age. In the 13th century, Sweden and the Novgorod Empire vied for supremacy here. With the construction of Häme Castle at the end of the 13th century, Swedish rule consolidated. Hämeenlinna became the administrative seat of the province of Häme and received city rights from Per Brahe the Younger in 1639 . It is the oldest city in the Finnish interior. Since 1775 the provinces of Häme and Uusimaa were ruled from here . In the 1860s the railway to Helsinki was built.

The coat of arms of Kanta-Häme is derived from the coat of arms of the historical landscape of Häme. The blazon reads: "In red a striding golden lynx with black tufts of ears, accompanied above by three six-pointed stars , below by four roses placed one to three , all silver."
