history
Tammela is derived from the Finnish tammi , " oak " and could refer to the foundation of the town in the middle of oak forests. The coat of arms of the municipality shows three oak leaves and two acorns. The first written mention of Tammela comes from the year 1423. Tammela calls itself the " Hakkapeliitta community" because a particularly large number of Finnish mercenaries came from Tammela during the Thirty Years' War . The neighboring town of Forssa was originally part of Tammela. But when Forssa had grown rapidly due to the industrial companies located there, it was released from Tammela in 1923 and raised to an independent market town. In 1956, the municipality of Tammela expanded again when part of the dissolved municipality of Kalvola was incorporated.
Tammela is located on the Ochsenweg , the historical trade route from Turku to Häme. Today the Ochsenweg is a tourist route. The main attraction of Tammela is the medieval stone church , which was built in the middle of the 16th century and expanded between 1781 and 1785. The parish of Tammela is a culturally and historically valuable milieu because despite some new buildings it was able to keep its historical face quite well.
