Petter Adolf Karsten (born February 16, 1834 in Merimasku , Russian Empire , † March 22, 1917 in Forssa , Russian Empire) was a Finnish mycologist and well-known mushroom expert from Finland and "father of Finnish mycology". His botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is " P. Karsten ". His family is originally from northern Germany. He only left his home region once in his youth and picked mushrooms on the Kola Peninsula .

He studied at the University of Helsinki . After completing his studies, he moved to Tammela , Finland , where he spent most of his life. There he taught and researched at the Agricultural Institute Mustiala , today a faculty of the Hämeen ammattikorkeakoulu ( Häme University of Applied Sciences ). His research focused on his home region. At the end of the 19th century he was well known for his research.

He collected a large number of different mushrooms, discovered and named over 200 new genera and more than 2000 new species . Since he often split up existing genera, many of the genera established by Karsten were not recognized for a long time, and only in the light of new molecular-biological findings is it returned to.
