Luis María de Larrea y Legarreta (born April 19, 1918 in Miravalles , Spain , † May 28, 2009 in Bilbao ) was a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Bilbao .

Life

Luis María de Larrea y Legarreta studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary of the diocese of Vitoria , then canon law and civil and civil procedural law at the Pontifical University of Salamanca , later he completed a postgraduate course at the law faculty of the University of Madrid. He was ordained a priest on June 27, 1943 .

From 1952 to 1971 he was Professor of Public Law of the Church, Canon Law and Moral Theology at the Seminary of Vitoria and Regens of the Seminary between 1965 and 1971. He was legal advisor to the Bishop of Vitoria, the ecclesiastical court and canon of Vitoria Cathedral.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 9, 1971 Bishop of León . The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain , Archbishop Luigi Dadaglio , donated him episcopal ordination on September 25 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Gabino Díaz Merchán , Archbishop of Oviedo , and Francisco Peralta y Ballabriga , Bishop of Vitoria . Shortly after his inauguration, he was also appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Valladolid . John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Bilbao on February 16, 1979.

He was also President and Vice-President of the Commission for Priestly Education and a member of the Commission for Missions and the Standing Committee of the Spanish Bishops' Conference . On September 8, 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
