Ricardo Cardinal Blázquez Pérez [ riˈkaɾðo ˈβlaθkeθ ˈpeɾeθ ] (born April 13, 1942 in Villanueva del Campillo , Spain ) is a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Valladolid From 2005 to 2008 and from 2014 to 2020 he was chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference .

Life

After finishing school, Pérez studied Catholic theology and was ordained a priest on February 18, 1967 . On April 8, 1988 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the auxiliary bishop of Santiago de Compostela , while the titular bishop of Germa in Galatia . He received the episcopal ordination on May 29, 1988 by the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela Antonio María Rouco Varela . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Madrid , Cardinal Angel Suquía Goicoechea , and the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain , Archbishop Mario Tagliaferri .

On May 26, 1992, he was appointed Bishop of Palencia . Since September 8, 1995 he held the office of Bishop of Bilbao until he was on March 13, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. was appointed Archbishop of Valladolid . The inauguration took place on April 17th of the same year.

From 2005 to 2008 he was chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference and was considered a representative of the liberal wing in the ranks of the Spanish episcopate. On March 4, 2008, he was voted out of office as chairman of the Bishops' Conference. His successor was his predecessor, the Archbishop of Madrid , Antonio María Rouco Varela , against whom he prevailed in a 2005 vote. From 2014 to 2020, Blázquez held the chair again.

In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Vallicella in the college of cardinals .
