Fake news

On January 14, 2016, some media reported that the Archbishop had preached on December 27, 2015, taking the position that women who suffered from domestic violence are often themselves to blame for disobeying their husbands. This message was first distributed in German by the Humanist Press Service. According to reports from several German bloggers who had translated the Archbishop's sermon, the Catholic News Agency withdrew a report on the grounds that the Archbishop of Toledo had apparently been misquoted. Some other statements were also "apparently incorrectly or incompletely disseminated via the Spanish media".

Archbishop Rodríguez Plaza also rejected the allegations and called the quotations incorrect. Indeed, he had stated: “The majority of women who are killed are killed by their husbands who do not respect their wives, who reject them, perhaps because they sometimes do not obey their instructions; or they are killed by their ex-partners or by those with whom they lived. Often it is a machismo reaction that originates from her filing for divorce. It is wonderful that the women who are threatened say so (openly), and there are new safeguards to prevent a crime. But the real, serious problem is rooted in the fact that there was (actually) no true marriage among these married couples. "
