The Archdiocese of Burgos ( Latin Archidioecesis Burgensis , Spanish Archidiócesis de Burgos ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in the Castilian city of Burgos .
In 1075 a bishopric was built in Burgos . The diocese had a forerunner in the diocese of Oca , which went under during the Moorish invasion of Spain. After the founding of the Diocese of the city of Burgos won importance as a coronation city of the kings of Castile . The construction of the Gothic cathedral of Burgos began in 1221, but was not completed until 1567. Two national councils were held in Burgos in the 11th and 12th centuries , the first of which (1078 or 1080) came about with the introduction of the Roman rite in Spain instead of the old Mozarabic rite . The elevation to the archbishopric takes place in 1574 by Pope Gregory XIII. The current archbishopric covers approximately the area of the province of Burgos .
