The Archdiocese of Barcelona ( Latin Archidioecesis Barcinonensis , Catalan Arquebisbat de Barcelona , Spanish Archidiócesis de Barcelona ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Barcelona in Spain .

history

The diocese of Barcelona was founded as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Tarragona in the 4th century . Through Pope Paul VI. the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto animo on March 25, 1964 and as an immediate archbishopric without suffragan dioceses directly subordinated to the Holy See . In addition, the Archbishop of Barcelona was given the privilege of wearing the pallium without being a metropolitan . Gregorio Modrego y Casaus became the first archbishop . On June 15, 2004, Pope John Paul II decreed the establishment of the dioceses of Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Terrassa in areas previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Barcelona with the Apostolic Constitution Ad totius dominici gregis . At the same time, Barcelona was made a metropolitan seat and the newly founded dioceses were assigned to it as suffragans.
