Cardinal Marcelo González Martín (born January 16, 1918 in Villanubla , Spain , † August 25, 2004 in Fuentes de Nava ) was Archbishop of Toledo .

Life

Marcelo González Martín studied at the universities of Valladolid and Comillas the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . In 1941 he received the sacrament of ordination . He was then a member of the teaching staff at the University of Valladolid until 1960 and worked as a pastor in various dioceses in Spain . For many years he served in the Archdiocese of Valladolid , the Catholic Action and Caritas . In 1960 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Astorga . He received his episcopal ordination on March 5, 1961 in the cathedral of Valladolid Ildebrando Antoniutti , Apostolic Nuncio in Spain; Co- consecrators were Luis Almarcha Hernández , Bishop of León , and José María Cirarda Lachiondo , Auxiliary Bishop in Seville .

From 1962 to 1965 Marcelo González Martín took part in the Second Vatican Council . In 1966 Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Casae Medianae and Koadjutorerzbischof the Archdiocese of Barcelona with right of succession. Just a year later, González Martín became Archbishop of Barcelona . In 1971 the Pope appointed him Archbishop of Toledo . On March 5, 1973 González Martín was admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Agostino .

Marcelo González Martín died on August 25, 2004 in Fuentes de Nava and was buried in the Cathedral of Toledo.
