José María Cirarda Lachiondo

José María Cirarda Lachiondo (born May 23, 1917 in Baquio , Spain , †  September 17, 2008 in Vitoria , Spain) was Archbishop of Pamplona . He was considered an important representative of the transition of Spanish Catholicism after the end of the Franco regime .

Life

José María Cirarda Lachiondo studied at the Pontifical University of Comillas , was awarded a Dr. theol. obtained his doctorate and was ordained a priest on July 5, 1942. He was professor of dogmatic theology at the seminary of Vitoria.

In 1960 he was, against the veto of Francisco Franco , by Pope John XXIII. Appointed Titular Bishop of Drusiliana and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Seville . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Ildebrando Antoniutti , Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, on 29 June 1960; Co- consecrators were José María Cardinal Bueno y Monreal , Archbishop of Seville, and Francisco Peralta y Ballabriga , Bishop of Vitoria. After the Second Vatican Council he represented the Spanish Church as a press representative.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Santander in 1968 and Apostolic Administrator of Bilbao from November 1968 ; 1971 Bishop of Cordoba . In 1978 he was appointed Archbishop of Pamplona , also with the task of the Apostolic Administration of Tudela .

From 1978 to 1981 he was Vice President of the Spanish Bishops' Conference .

His age-related resignation was granted in 1993 by Pope John Paul II .
