Location of the municipality | ||
Bakio (Spanish: Baquio ) is a municipality in the province of Bizkaia in the Spanish Basque Country .
Geographical location
Bakio is located in a valley through which the Estepona River flows. The valley is bounded by mountain ranges to the east, south and west, while in the north the valley opens up to the Cantabrian Sea . The closest municipalities are Bermeo in the east, Munguía in the south and Maruri and Lemóniz in the west.
history
The municipality was formerly called Basigo de Baquio and the main town of the municipality still bears this name. In 1927, the localities of San Pelayo (San Pelaio) and Zubiaur were incorporated, which until then belonged to the neighboring municipality of Bermeo . Although the community is located directly on the coast and its foundation goes back to the fishing there, Bakio has always been shaped by its agriculture. This is due to the moderate microclimate with little snowfall and frost. This favors the cultivation of vines and the production of the Basque wine Txakoli . In the recent past Bakio has increasingly turned to tourism.
