Portugalete is a city in the Spanish Basque Country (province of Bizkaia ).

Portugalete has 45,766 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of ​​3 km². Portugalete is located northwest of the provincial capital Bilbao on the Ría de Bilbao , the mouth of the Nervión River in the Bay of Biscay , which is navigable for seagoing ships , and belongs to the district (Spanish Comarca , Basque Eskualdea ) Greater Bilbao and the metropolitan area of Bilbao.
