The Nervión [ neɾ'βion ] ( Basque : Nerbioi ; in ancient times, Latin Nerva , Greek Νερούα Neroua ) is a river in northern Spain . It rises in the province of Burgos , near the Orduña - Pass the Nervion waterfall meters from 270th Later it flows through the province of Biscaya (Spanish: Vizcaya, Basque: Bizkaia ), meets at Basauri with the river Ibaizabal and finally flows into the Bay of Biscay . Its length is 76 km.
At the level of the Casco Viejo (old town) of Bilbao , 16 km from the sea, where the river water mixes with the sea water, the Nervión turns into a ria and is from then on known as the Ría de Bilbao .
From the city of Bilbao to the sea, a distinction is made between the banks of the Ria, where the places on the Ria differ significantly socially and economically. For historical reasons, the left bank (margen izquierda) is populated with heavy industry and working-class towns , whereas the wealthy population lives on the right bank of the Ria (margen derecha) .
The places on the left bank of the Ría de Bilbao are (from Bilbao to the sea):
