Getxo [ 'getʃo ] ( Spanish Guecho ) is a city in the province of Bizkaia in the autonomous region of the Basque Country in Spain .
Getxo is located at the mouth of the Nervión on the Bay of Biscay , adjacent to the provincial capital Bilbao to the north . Getxo belongs to the district ( comarca ) Greater Bilbao and the agglomeration of Bilbao.
In the 19th century , wealthy merchants and industrialists from Bilbao and Madrid , who moved their summer residence to Getxo, ensured rapid population growth and an economic boom; seaside resorts, a casino and hotels were built. The up to 60 meter high cliffs, which partly merge into sandy beaches, characterize the image of the city, which is attractive due to its mild climate (average 8 ° C in winter and 20 ° C in summer). The oldest transporter ferry in the world, the Puente de Bizkaia from 1893 , leads from the Las Arenas district ( The Sandy Beaches ) over the Ria des Nervión to the city of Portugalete opposite . Since 2006, the ferry is one of the world heritage of UNESCO .
The port in the Algorta district ( attested as an independent fishing village from the 11th century ) is now mainly used for tourism and leisure, traditional fishing hardly plays a role anymore, although its proximity to the city of Bilbao makes it a decisive contribution to the modern era Development of the city provided.
