José María Martín Zárraga (* 15. August 1930 in Getxo , † 3 April 2012 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football player , coach and official .
career
Zárraga began his career with his hometown club Arenas de Getxo , a historically significant club that won the Copa del Rey in 1919 . In 1949 an envoy from Real Madrid discovered him and signed the then 18-year-old Basque for the club's second team, AD Plus Ultra . Zárraga remained in the capital's youth team for two years before coach Héctor Scarone brought the right midfielder into the first squad. With Real Madrid he celebrated great successes such as winning six championship titles and five European championship cups as well as a world cup . Since 1958, Zárraga was also the captain of Real Madrid.
Functionary and trainer
As a coach, Zárraga worked for one season at Real Murcia and two more seasons at FC Málaga before moving to management at the latter. He worked as an official for six years and then moved to Valencia CF for two years in the position of sports director . He celebrated his greatest successes at Deportivo Alavés , where he a. a. negotiated the transfers of Andoni Zubizarreta , López Rekarte , Juanjo or Jorge Valdano .
