European Champion Clubs' Cup 1958/59

The 1959/60 European Champion Clubs' Cup was the 5th edition of the competition. 27 club teams took part, including 26 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Real Madrid .

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, there was a playoff in a neutral place. With the exception of Real Madrid , Red Star Belgrade , Sparta Rotterdam , B 1909 Odense and BSC Young Boys , the clubs had to start in the preliminary round.

The final took place on May 18, 1960 in Hampden Park in Glasgow in front of 135,000 spectators, the highest number of spectators at a European Cup final to date. Real Madrid won 7-3 against Eintracht Frankfurt for the fifth time in a row. Real Madrid's Ferenc Puskás was the top scorer with twelve goals.

This game is considered to be one of the best games ever. Sir Bobby Charlton gave the following verdict on the game: "My first thought was, this game is a hoax, edited, a movie because these players did things that are not possible!"
The then Danish UEFA President Ebbe Schwartz on that Endgame: “The best of the five finals so far! That includes two things, which is a credit to unity. ”
The then England international Jimmy Greaves , who followed the game with the England team in Budapest in front of the TV screen, praised: “ We have never seen anything like that. Real was like from another planet. We have followed everything with their mouths open. "
The long-time coach of Manchester United , Alex Ferguson , then the game in Glasgow attended Hampden Park at the age of 18 years. According to his own statement, this game convinced him so much that he decided to pursue the profession of footballer.
The BBC repeats the game every year.
