Ian McMillan (born March 18, 1931 in Airdrie , North Lanarkshire ) is a retired Scottish football player who played in attacking midfield .
Life
The then 17-year-old McMillan received his first professional contract with his hometown club Airdrieonians FC , where he was under contract from 1948 to 1958.
During this time he also made the leap to the Scottish national team , for which he played three games in 1952 and scored two goals. Further international appearances (one each) followed in 1955, 1956 and 1961. McMillan was also part of Scotland's 1954 World Cup squad of 22 . However, the Scottish Association decided to travel to the World Cup finals with only 13 players and McMillan was one of the nine players who were “sorted out” who stayed at home.
In October 1958 he moved to the Glasgow Rangers and was an important part of what was perhaps the best era in the club history of Rangers FC for the next six years. During this period he won a total of eleven titles with the club (four times national champion and just as often Scottish cup winner and three times winner of the domestic league cup ), where he crowned his last season in 1963/64 with the Treble .
In addition, the Rangers of those days were successful in international comparison. In the 1959/60 European Cup , they made it to the semi-finals, where they had no chance against Eintracht Frankfurt (1: 6 and 3: 6) and in the following season they achieved - among other things, with an 11-0 overall victory against them in the quarter-finals Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-0 in the first leg and 8-0 in the second leg) - the finals for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1960/61 against Fiorentina , which were lost with an aggregate result of 1: 4 (0: 2 and 1: 2) .
McMillan later commented on the greatest weakness of the team at the international level: “We were a bit naive then in the sense that we always played on attack instead of focusing on a controlled game, as the teams practice today . We only learned this way of playing through the teams we played against, but we had some disastrous results and it was still fun to be part of it. "
In December 1964 McMillan went back to Airdrieonians FC, in whose ranks he let his active career end. He later described the different quality of the two teams he played in as follows: “In Airdie, I was always happy when there was a team-mate to whom I could pass the ball. With the Rangers, I had five or six options. "
After his active career, McMillan switched to coaching and was head coach of his home club Airdrieonians FC in the 1970s, of which he is now Honorary President.
