The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 61st time in 1960/61 . It was also the 64th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 24, 1960 and ended on May 2, 1961. In the 1960/61 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 game days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the 32nd time in the club's history, the Glasgow Rangers . The Rangers qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1961/62 . Seventh and eighth place Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the Exhibition Cities Cup . As a cup winner , Dunfermline Athletic qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The FC Clyde and Ayr United relegated to Division Two . The top scorer was Alex Harley of Third Lanark with 42 goals .
