The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the eighth time in 1982/83 . It was also the 86th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1982/83 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
On the final day of the match, Dundee United secured their first championship in the club's history in the city derby against FC Dundee . Dundee United qualified as champions for the following European Cup of the 1983/84 season . This year's cup winners FC Aberdeen also won the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup by beating Real Madrid 2-1 . As the third Scottish club after Celtic ( 1967 ) and the Rangers ( 1972 ), Aberdeen won a European Cup. Accordingly, the Dons and the cup finalists , the Glasgow Rangers, played in the European Cup Winners' Cup . Runner-up Celtic Glasgow and fifth-placed FC St. Mirren qualified for the UEFA Cup .
The FC Kilmarnock and Greenock Morton got into the end of the season First Division from. Celtic Glasgow's Charlie Nicholas was the top scorer with 29 goals .
