The Ibrox Park was a football stadium in the same district of Glasgow . It was the home of the Glasgow Rangers between 1887 and 1899. It was also the venue for the Scottish Cup finals three times and the international venue for Scotland three times .
history
The Rangers, founded in Glasgow in 1872, previously played between 1876 and 1887 in Kinning Park in the south of the city. After an expansion was not possible, the Rangers moved within Glasgow further west to the city limits to Govan in order to build a new stadium. It was Ibrox chosen as the new location as it via good transport links by the nearby train station had.
A ten-year lease was signed on the site. On the north side of the field, Fred Braby & Co. built an uncovered grandstand with 1,200 seats and an adjacent pavilion . The other three sides were terraced and a career surrounded. Another grandstand was later built on the south side of the field.
The opening game of the new home ground took place on August 20, 1887 in a friendly against Preston North End .
The Rangers were a founding member of the Scottish Football League in 1890 , and the first league game was played on August 18, 1890 at Ibrox Park against the Heart of Midlothian . The game ended with a 5-2 win in front of 4,000 spectators. There was a record attendance in the league on October 22, 1892 when 8,000 spectators saw a 1: 3 defeat at the Old Firm against Celtic Glasgow .
In Ibrox Park, the Scottish national team completed an international match in 1889, 1892 and 1897 . The highest number of spectators was set up in 1892 when a total of 21,000 Scots saw a 4-1 loss to England .
It has also been chosen to host the Scottish FA Cup final three times . In 1890 won FC Queen's Park against Vale of Leven , 1892 Celtic against Queen's Park and in 1895 the FC St. Bernard's against Renton . At the final in 1892, which was attended by around 40,000 spectators in the overcrowded stadium, three people died after a grandstand had partially collapsed.
After city rival Celtic opened one of the most modern stadiums of its time with the new Celtic Park in 1892 , the Rangers decided to lease a new location next to Ibrox Park and to build a new stadium from scratch.
In December 1899, the Rangers' new stadium opened. The Ibrox Stadium was built to the west of the old site and partially overlapped the old structure that was directly on Copland Road. The eastern end of the former Ibrox Park was used for housing.
The Rangers' last league game at Ibrox Park was played on December 9, 1899, when 5000 spectators saw a 6-1 home win over FC Kilmarnock .
