The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 17th time in 1889/90 . The most important football cup competition in Scottish club football was directed and hosted by the Scottish Football Association. It began on August 31, 1889 and ended with the repeat finals on February 22, 1890 in Ibrox Park, Glasgow. As the defending champion, Third Lanark started the competition that had won against Celtic Glasgow in the final last year . Record winner FC Queen's Park (8th title) faced FC Vale of Leven in this year's Scottish Cup final . Queen's Park reached the final for the ninth time in the club's history since 1874 . The club from Glasgow won all the finals. Vale of Leven from Alexandria reached the final for the seventh and last time in the club's history. The first final game ended 1: 1. In the repeat finals, Queen's Park won 2-1.

Goal nets were introduced when the Scottish Cup was held in 1889/90, and for the first time the referee was the sole director of the game. Previously there were several sub-referee (umpire).
