The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 94th time in 1978/79 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 16, 1978 and ended with the 2nd repeat final on May 28, 1979 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, the Glasgow Rangers started the competition, who had prevailed in the final of the previous year against FC Aberdeen . In the final of this year's cup, Rangers and Hibernian Edinburgh faced each other. The two clubs met for the first time in their club history in the cup final. The Rangers reached the final for the fourth consecutive year since 1976 . It was also the 33rd FA Cup final for the Gers in the club's history since 1877 . The Hibs reached the final for the 10th time after 1887 , 1896 , 1902 , 1914 , 1923 , 1924 , 1947 , 1958 and 1972 . The title was won in 1887 and 1902. After two goalless draws, the Rangers won the second replay final 3-2 after extra time against the Hibs . In the same season, the Rangers won the Scottish League Cup . In the Scottish Championship they were runner-up behind Celtic . The Rangers took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup by winning the Cup the following season . There, the team eliminated in the second round to eventual winners, the FC Valencia out.
