The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 25th time in 1897/98 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed and hosted by the Scottish Football Association, began on January 8, 1898 and ended with the final on March 26, 1898 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, the Glasgow Rangers started the competition, which had prevailed in the previous year's final against FC Dumbarton and won the title for the second time since 1894 . In this year's final of the Scottish Cup, the Rangers were again , the opponent was the second division FC Kilmarnock. With a 2-0 victory, the Rangers won the Scottish FA Cup for the third time in their fourth final after 1877 , 1894 and 1897 . The Kilmarnock FC reached the final for the first time in club history. The Rangers were runner-up behind Celtic Glasgow in the 1897/98 season of the Scottish Championship . The Killies became second division champions .
