Rachel Squire (born July 13, 1954 in London , † January 5, 2006 in Saline ) was a British Labor Party politician .

Life

Squire attended Godolphin and Latymer School and then went on to study archeology and anthropology at Durham University . Between 1975 and 1978 Squire was a social worker in Birmingham . She also followed her studies. In 1981 she started a full-time job with the NUPE union in Liverpool . After a year she was transferred to a union site in Ayrshire before moving to Renfrewshire in 1983 . From 1985 onwards, Squire was the NUPE Official for Education in Scotland.

In 1993 Squire had a brain tumor surgically removed. She later distinguished herself as the patroness of a non-profit organization for brain cancer patients. In 2004, another brain tumor was removed from her. Although the operation was deemed successful, Squire suffered a stroke in 2005 due to cerebral haemorrhage. She succumbed to her condition on January 5, 2006.

Political career

For the first time Squire stood for the Labor Party in the general election of 1992 in the constituency of Dunfermline West . She achieved 42.0% of the votes and thus won the mandate. In the following general election in 1997 and 2001 , she defended her mandate. In Parliament, she served between 1997 and 2001 as Parliamentary Private Secretary under Stephen Byers and Estelle Morris respectively .

In the course of the 2005 constituency revision, Squire's constituency Dunfermline West was dissolved. For the general election in 2005 , she therefore applied for the mandate of the newly created constituency of Dunfermline and West Fife , in which large parts of her former constituency were absorbed. She again received a majority vote and thus retained a seat in the House of Commons . Squire died a few months after the election, so by-elections were required in her constituency. The Labor Party placed Catherine Stihler in this position, but on election day she was unable to prevail against the Liberal Democrat Willie Rennie .
