Willie Rennie (born September 27, 1967 ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats .

Life

Rennie grew up in Strathmiglo and attended Bell Baxter High School in Cupar . He then went to Paisley College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology. A year later he received an economics diploma from Glasgow College . He lives in Kelty with his wife and two sons .

Political career

Together with the chairman of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Jim Wallace , Rennie was responsible for the party's campaign for the first Scottish general election in 1999 . After Labor MP Rachel Squire , who had represented the constituency of Dunfermline and West Fife since the 2005 elections in the British House of Commons , passed away, new elections were held in the constituency in question at the beginning of 2006. To these, Rennie stood as a candidate for the Liberal Democrats and surprisingly received the constituency mandate and moved into the British House of Commons. In the following general election in 2010 , Rennie could not defend his mandate against Thomas Docherty of the Labor Party. The following year, Rennie ran in the 2011 Scottish general election on the regional list of the electoral region of Mid Scotland and Fife . He entered the Scottish Parliament as the only Liberal Democrat in the electoral region.

Due to the poor election result, the party chairman, Tavish Scott , resigned from his position. Rennie succeeded him and has been chairman of the Scottish Liberal Democrats since May 2011. In the Scottish general elections in 2016 , Rennie ran for the direct mandate of the constituency of North East Fife , which his party colleague Iain Smith had lost to SNP candidate Roderick Campbell in the previous election . With votes he won the mandate.
