As defending champions, FC Vale of Leven started the competition that had won against Glasgow Rangers in the final last year . In this year's Scottish Cup final, the defending champion from Alexandria met Third Lanark . It was the second participation in the final for both clubs. The Vales won the final 1-0 with a goal from John McDougall , securing their second cup victory. From 1878 the referee used a whistle .
