Third Lanark (officially: Third Lanark Athletic Club ) was a Scottish football club from Glasgow .

history

The club was founded in 1872 as the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers football team under the name 3rd LRV FC (Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers Football Club) . When it separated from its military roots, the club was named Third Lanark .

After winning the Scottish Cup in 1889 , the club was one of the founding members of the Scottish Premier League in 1890 . In 1904, Third Lanark finished the season as first in the table and was thus Scottish national champion. The following year won the Scottish Cup again. In addition, the club won the Glasgow Cup several times .

In the following years the club was no longer particularly successful and often only played second class. In 1936 they made it to the cup final again, but lost to the Glasgow Rangers 0-1. In 1960 they made it into the final of the Scottish League Cup , but Heart of Midlothian won the title with a 2-1 win. 1963 achieved the last success in the club's history with victory in the Glasgow Cup. In the years that followed, mismanagement spread and in 1967 the club became the first club in Scottish football history to file for bankruptcy and was dissolved.

There are always rumors that the club could be revived by supporters.

present

Since 2007, an amateur club called the Third Lanark Athletic Club has managed to keep a team in the Greater Glasgow Premier AFL. In the 2011/12 season, the 1st division of the league was won. Teams also play in the Glasgow & District Youth Football League. In the 2013/14 season, for example, a U19 team played in the 2nd division of this league.

In addition, the club is trying to regain the former Cathkin Park venue .
