The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 88th time in 1972/73 . The most important Scottish soccer cup competition, which was directed and hosted by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 16, 1972 and ended with the final on May 5, 1973 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . Record winner Celtic Glasgow started the competition as defending champion . In the previous year's final , the Bhoys had prevailed against Hibernian Edinburgh . In this year's Scottish Cup final, Celtic and the Rangers faced each other at the Old Firm . In the 100th anniversary of the club's existence, the Rangers celebrated their 20th cup win since their first victory in 1894 with a 3-2 win . It was the 10th final derby between the two clubs since the previous finals in 1894, 1899 , 1904 , 1909 , 1928 , 1963 , 1966 , 1969 and 1971 . After the game, Princess Alexandra presented the trophy to Rangers captain John Greig . It was the final Scottish Cup final that was attended by more than 100,000 spectators. In the 1972/73 season , Celtic won the Scottish Championship , the Rangers the Cup and the Hibs the League Cup . As the winner of the competition took Rangers to the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in part and lost in the second round against Borussia Moenchengladbach .
