biography

Greig was active with the Glasgow Rangers between 1960 and 1978 and was team captain for a long time . During his playing career, he won the Scottish Cup five times with the Rangers : 1961, 1963, 1964, 1975 and 1976. He was also the Scottish Cup winner six times with the Rangers in 1962 , 1963 , 1964 , 1966 , 1973 and 1976 . In addition, he won with his team the Scottish League Cup (Scottish League Cup) in 1961 , 1962 , 1964 , 1965 , 1971 , 1976 and 1978 .

In the final of the 1966/67 European Cup Winners' Cup, his team at the Nuremberg stadium lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich on May 31, 1967 after extra time.

The second Ibrox disaster occurred in 1971 . 66 football fans died during the Old Firm derby between Celtic Glasgow and the Glasgow Rangers. The accident happened when thousands of Rangers spectators left the stadium when the score was 0: 1 and a barrier broke away. In the 89th minute of the game, Jimmy Johnstone scored for Celtic and so hardly any fan believed that the guests would let the game be taken away. To commemorate this event, there is a memorial with the names of the victims and a statue of Greig in the Ibrox Stadium .

He celebrated the greatest success with the Rangers when they won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971/72 when his team beat Dynamo Moscow 3-2 on May 24, 1972 at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona . In 1973 he also played in the final of the Super Cup and lost to Ajax Amsterdam with 1: 3 and 2: 3 in the home and away games .

As a player, he was best known as an inspiring team captain as well as his sharp shots and mastery of his defense .

Creig, who was Scotland's Footballer of the Year in 1966 and 1976, retired as a player in May 1978 and immediately became the Rangers' coach . He held this office from 1978 to 1983 and was characterized by the fact that after five years without winning the Scottish Championship, the steadily increasing pressure on the club's management was too great and Greig reacted to this with his resignation.

He then worked as a football commentator on the radio before he took a position in the public relations department of the Glasgow Rangers in 1990 .

For his sporting merits, he was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire in 1977.
