Carlos Javier Cuéllar Jiménez (born August 23, 1981 in Madrid , Spain ), called Carlos Cuéllar , is a Spanish football player on the position of defender .

Athletic career

Cuéllar began his career with CD Calahorra. Here he played for a year. In 2001 he was signed by CD Numancia , where he completed 62 league games in two years before moving to his first major club, CA Osasuna , in 2003.

In his second season he reached the final of the Copa del Rey with Osasuna in 2004/05 and was fourth in the Spanish league . In the 2006/07 season he made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup , but failed at the eventual tournament winner Sevilla FC .

In the summer of 2007, Carlos Cuéllar was signed by the Glasgow Rangers for three million euros. He signed a four-year contract. With the Rangers he has won the Scottish League Cup 2007/08 and reached the final of the 2008 UEFA Cup.

Carlos Cuéllar played all eight games up to the final and the Spaniard was also on the pitch in the final, which was lost 2-0 to Zenit Saint Petersburg .

He was also voted Scottish Footballer of the Year in 2008.

For the 2008/09 season he moved to Aston Villa.

For the 2012/13 season he moved to Sunderland AFC.
