Charles "Charlie" Nicholas (born December 30, 1961 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player .

life and career

Nicholas started his career at Celtic Glasgow . The Scot came under contract with the Greens in 1980. In the 1982/1983 season Nicholas was so successful that he was named Player of the Year in Scotland. In June 1983 he was signed by Arsenal FC . The transfer fee was £ 800,000. Because of the way he lived, he was also called Champagne Charlie in London. After relatively unsuccessful years in London, he moved to Aberdeen FC in 1988 . After just two years, he got where he started: at Celtic Glasgow. In 1996 he ended his career after an interlude at FC Clyde . Internationally, he played 20 times for the Scottish national football team and scored five goals. Nicholas took part in the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 and was eliminated with just one draw with the team in the group stage. Today he is a columnist for various newspapers and an analyst for Sky Sports.
