Mark Edward McGhee (born May 25, 1957 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach.

Career

player

McGhee started his career at Greenock Morton . In 1977 he moved to Newcastle United and stayed for a year. From 1978 he played for the Scottish club FC Aberdeen . With Aberdeen he celebrated his greatest successes as a player. Under coach Sir Alex Ferguson , the European Cup Winners' Cup was won in 1983 after beating Real Madrid in the final . In the next season, McGhee played in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV . Against HSV, he was successful in the previous season in the UEFA Super Cup. He won the title with Aberdeen and scored the goal in the second leg to make it two to zero. After a year in Germany , McGhee moved to Celtic Glasgow in his hometown . From 1989 to 1991 McGhee laced up again for Newcastle United. In 1991 he also played in the second Swedish division at IK Brage . His last stop as a player was Reading FC . There he began his career as a coach.

McGhee had several positions as a coach in England and Scotland.

From January 2013 to August 2017 he was assistant coach of the Scottish national football team under Gordon Strachan .
