François "Swat" Van der Elst (born December 1, 1954 in Opwijk , † January 11, 2017 in Aalst ) was a Belgian football player .

career

Club career

Van der Elst began his career in the youth team at Eendracht Mazenzele. In 1969 he came to RSC Anderlecht . During his time with the men from Brussels he won the Belgian championship in 1972 and 1974 and was Belgian cup winner in 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1976 . Internationally, he was able to win the European Supercup in 1976 and 1978 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in the same years . In the 1976 final Van der Elst scored two goals to triumph for the Belgians. In 1977 he was the top scorer in the top Belgian league. In 1980 he came to New York Cosmos . After just a year he went back to Europe and signed with West Ham United . After three years in England , he let his career at SC Lokeren end.

International playing career

Internationally, Van der Elst played 44 times for Belgium and scored 14 goals. He took part in the 1980 European Championships in Italy , where he was runner-up with the team. At the 1982 World Cup in Spain he was eliminated with the Red Devils in the second group stage. Van der Elst played in all eight qualifying games for the 1980 European Championship against group opponents Austria, Portugal, Scotland and Norway, scoring five goals. It was the winning goal for the 2-1 win on September 12, 1979 in Oslo against Norway, the 2-0 in Brussels against Portugal, the 1-0 lead on November 21, 1979 in the first leg against Scotland and the 2: 0 and 3: 0 in the second leg on December 19, 1979 in Glasgow . Sandy Jardine , Graeme Souness , Kenny Dalglish and Joe Jordan had to acknowledge the superiority of coach Guy Thys' team in their 3-1 home defeat . In the European Championship finals from June 11 to 22, 1980 in Italy, the tricky offensive player was active in the three group matches against England (1: 1), Spain (2: 1) and Italy (0: 0) and stormed in the final on June 22nd in Rome against Germany in the Belgian attack alongside his strike partner Jan Ceulemans .
