Václav Mašek (born March 21, 1941 in Prague ) is a former Czechoslovak football player . He was runner-up in 1962 with the Czechoslovak national team .

Player career

Mašek began playing football at the Prague club ABC Braník, at the age of 16 he moved to Sparta Prague . In the 1958/59 season, the left winger made his debut in the first team and was henceforth a fixture in the game of the Czech top club.

Mašek was appointed to the Czechoslovak national team in 1960 at the age of only 19, and he was also a member of the team at the 1962 World Cup in Chile . There he scored a goal after 15 seconds in the group game against Mexico , a record that was only exceeded 40 years later by Hakan Şükür , who scored in the game for third place after just 11 seconds. Overall, Mašek completed 16 international matches for Czechoslovakia by 1965 , in which he scored five goals.

In 1965 and 1972 he won the Czechoslovak Championship with his team , in 1964 and 1972 the national cup competition . In the 1972/73 European Cup Winners' Cup , he made it to the semifinals with Sparta. In the same competition he was the top scorer with six hits in the 1964/65 season .

In the 1970/71 season he played for Dukla Prague and then returned to Sparta Prague. At the age of 33, Mašek moved to his youth club ABC Braník, for which he played until 1978. Then Mašek also worked there as a trainer .

In 309 first division games, Mašek scored 121 goals. Taking into account all games, he is Sparta Prague's most successful goalscorer of all time, in 677 encounters he scored 406 times in the opposing goal.

From 1990 to 1991 he was President of AC Sparta Prague.
