Ramas Schengelia ( Georgian რამაზ შენგელია ; Russian Рамаз Александрович Шенгелия / Ramas Alexandrowitsch Schengelija ; international spelling Ramaz Shengelia ; born January 1, 1957 in Kutaisi , Georgian SSR ; † June 21, 2012 in Tbilisi , Georgian footballer ) was a Soviet football player of Georgian origin.
Career
Schengelia began his career at Torpedo Kutaisi , the club in his hometown. In 1977 he moved to Dinamo Tbilisi . In 1978 he was with this team of Soviet champions and for the first time elected Soviet footballer of the year . In 1979 he won the Soviet Cup with Dinamo Tbilisi . In the 1980/1981 season he and his team won the European Cup Winners' Cup and became Soviet footballer of the year for the second time. He scored a total of 120 goals in 283 league games for Dinamo Tbilisi.
Between 1979 and 1983 Schengelia played 26 games for the Soviet national team and scored 10 goals, he took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain and scored one goal in this tournament.
After 1983 Schengelia could no longer build on its outstanding achievements and was no longer nominated for the national team, even Dinamo Tbilisi could not win any more titles. In 1986 he graduated from Tbilisi State University . From 1989 to 1990 he played one season for IFK Holmsund in Sweden.
During the 1990s Schengelia worked for the Georgian Football Association and was manager of the national team. He gave up this post in 2002 due to health problems.
Schengelia died in 2012 as a result of a brain hemorrhage. The Ramas Schengelia Stadium in Kutaisi was named after him.
