← European Cup Winners' Cup 1984/85 |
The 1985/86 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 26th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 31 club teams took part, including 26 national cup winners and 5 defeated cup finalists (Galway United, Fram Reykjavík, CS Universitatea Craiova, Tatabányai Bányász SC and Bangor City). Bulgaria did not register a team, as there was no cup winner after the cup final was canceled. Clubs from England were excluded from participation for an indefinite period after the Heysel disaster , so that Everton FC could not defend their title.
DFB Cup winners Bayer 05 Uerdingen from Germany, FDGB Cup winners Dynamo Dresden from GDR , ÖFB Cup winners SK Rapid Wien from Austria and Cup winners FC Aarau from Switzerland participated.
Dynamo Kiev won the final at Lyon's Stade Municipal de Gerland 3-0 against Atlético Madrid. It was after winning 1974/75 (also with a 3-0 final win, there against Ferencváros Budapest) the second title in this competition for the club from Kiev.
Top scorer were Frank Lippmann from Dynamo Dresden as well as Igor Belanow , Oleg Blochin and Alexander Sawarow from the title holder Dynamo Kiev with five goals each.
mode
As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.

The second leg between Bayer 05 Uerdingen and Dynamo Dresden went down in football history as a miracle from Grotenburg . After 2-0 in the first leg and a 3-1 deficit at half-time, Uerdingen needed five more goals to advance to the next round. After the Dresden goalkeeper Bernd Jakubowski was unable to continue playing after a foul by Wolfgang Funkel and was replaced at the second half, the Krefeld team managed to score six goals, for which substitute goalkeeper Jens Ramme was largely to blame.
